Since 1989, Amer-I-Can has trained over 25,000 adult and juvenile inmates in over 30 correctional institutions in California. Since 1998, Amer-I-Can has provided life skills training to over 1,500 Los Angeles County jail inmates sponsored by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Since 1992, Amer-I-Can has impacted approximately 30,000 Los Angeles gang members, bringing about a lasting truce “cease fire” between rival gangs, resulting in a dramatic reduction in gang related homicides. Over 200 former gang members from Watts and South Central Los Angeles have received Amer-I-Can Life Management Skills training and a number of them have become mentors within their communities for at risk youth. Amer-I-Can working with local businesses has placed Amer-I-Can trainees in full-time jobs. Amer-I-Can has participated with local radio stations, celebrities, community leaders and volunteers to help feed approximately 40,000 needy Los Angeles residents during Thanksgiving since 1998.
In the first year (2003), of a two-year Long Beach City grant, thirty inner-city students graduated from the Amer-I-Can Program (ages 14-21). Seventy-five community people have enrolled as Amer-I-Can “Peace Squad” members working to improve the cleanliness of the streets and parks of Long Beach; while local businesses and concerned community members have provided jobs, donations, and in-kind services to support the local Amer-I-Can projects.
