The Amer-I-Can Program employs facilitators to guide participants through the daily lessons. They act as mentors, not as consultants, and are there to provide input and expertise. Facilitators must refrain from engaging in discussions with the trainees during peer group interactions. A major cause for lack of effectiveness in many group-training programs is the requirement that the group leader be a dynamic personality who provides maximum verbal input and leadership in discussions. In these programs, trainees often become dependent upon the leader. This dependency inhibits true growth in the trainee, who will then matriculate back into the mainstream society without the leader, and without the confidence of managing his or her own life. The Amer-I-Can Program trains facilitators to help trainees avoid this dependency.
